Small Boxes — Heavy, Dense Items

Books, tools, tinned food and anything dense should go in small boxes. It's tempting to use a bigger box, but a large box full of heavy items quickly becomes too heavy to lift safely.

Medium Boxes — The All-Rounder

Kitchenware, toys, shoes and most general household items suit a medium box — big enough to pack efficiently, small enough to stay manageable once full.

Large Boxes — Light, Bulky Items

Bedding, cushions, lampshades and clothing are ideal for large boxes, since they take up space without adding much weight.

What Not to Overload

As a general rule, if you can't comfortably lift a packed box with both hands, it's too heavy — repack it across two smaller boxes instead. Overloaded boxes are also more likely to split or burst in transit.

Don't Forget Specialist Boxes

Wardrobe boxes let you move hanging clothes without folding them, and box dividers help protect glassware, mirrors and picture frames.
